Anime Comes Alive Through This Fascinating Hobby!
Over the past two decades Anime has become increasingly popular and along with it anime conventions have begun to draw massive crowds. Born from these huge gatherings of fanatical anime fans was the hobby of creating anime costumes to imitate characters from various anime series. Derived from a combination of the English words ‘costume’ and ‘play’ this beloved hobby is known as ‘Cosplay Costume‘.
In areas such as the Akihabara district in Japan, cosplay has become an extremely popular and commonly exhibited pastime. In public settings such as parties, nightclubs and video games show, cosplay is a common sight. Some areas have even begun to see the emergence of cosplay cafes and venues that cater exclusively to costly.
One of the biggest parts of the Manga cosplay hobby is the creation of the character costume itself. The more intricate and accurate the details of the costume are the better the cosplay is considered. To this end even a person’s hair, skin and physical features may become part of the overall cosplay costume. Many anime events even hold contests where cosplay costumes are judged for accuracy and creativity.
Very much different than Halloween costumes, the goal of a cosplay costume is to literally become the character that is being depicted. For this reason cosplay costumes tend to be extremely elaborate and even simple costumes may take months of research and crafting to make properly. Many costume makers will employ many doctrines of craftsmanship to get the proper texture, look and feel of the specific character they want to cosplay as.
The trends that guide Amazing Cosplay are always changing. Every few months as new anime series come out the characters and costumes of cosplay shift and change. More recently even some non-anime films have become the focus of many fan’s cosplay costumes. Draco Malfoy of the Harry Potter series and a variety of characters from Star Wars are prime examples of recently popular non-anime costumes.
Evolving from within the hobby of cosplay itself are some subset groups of enthusiasts who have taken cosplay in new directions. Crossplay for example is a type of cosplay where the players themselves dress up as characters of the opposite sex. However since anime tends to feature characters wearing a variety of unique and not necessarily gender-specific clothing, this is not seen as all that odd.
Cosplay has grown so much in popularity that in its modern incarnation, Cosplay Character has magazines and websites devoted to it. These resources feature detailed instructions on costume making and materials as well as images of costumes from past conventions. Conventions routinely allow ‘cameko’ or ‘camera boy’ photographers who dedicate themselves to photographing cosplay events.
With Anime being drastically on the rise in the last two decades, Manga and Cosplay fandom has only increased. The diligent services that cosplay fans put into their hobby as they toil for months on costumes is second to none. With finely honed craftsmanship and a precise attention to detail, Cosplay is a fascinating art form that incorporates many forms of art and culture while providing a fun and social hobby for thousands.
