Costumes Cloak

Has anyone used Simplicity pattern 9887(hooded costume cloaks)?

Can someone please tell me what is going with the hood for pattern B,C,and D. It tells me to cut out two of them, but then it wants it cut on the centerfold, but on the part where it shows to how the place your pattern pieces on the fabric it show two to them cut NOT on the centerfold. Then, when I read how to sew it, it only talks about sewing one piece, but then you would see the raw seam on the inside of the hood?????

Is this an error?
Has anyone encountered this?

Haven’t made it but I do happen to have the pattern. Read the directions and looked over the suggested cutting placement. Yup, you’re correct. Cut one NOT on centerfold of fabric (even though the pattern piece indicates it is to be placed on a fold), seam the center back, and sew to neckline of cape. The center back seam would be exposed on the inside of the hood. Not too bad, considering the entire cape is unlined so all raw seams are visible on the inside.

Ways around this: Cut two hoods, seam them up the center back, then place the RIGHT sides together and seam around the face opening leaving the neck edge open. Turn them right side out. Press. You’ve now got a lined hood. Sew to the neck edge of the hood to the neck edge of the cape as instructed and use the neck facing to hide that seam.

Another method is to use a french seam which, while still visible, hides the raw edges of the fabric. French seams are often used on sheer fabrics or lingerie and might be useful in this instance if lining the hood in the same fabric would make it too bulky. With WRONG sides together, stitch about 1/4″ from the raw edges. Trim raw edges close to your stitching. Bring the right sides together and stitch about 1/4″ from the seam, encasing the raw edges in your new seamline. Now you’ve got a finished seam inside the hood with no raw edges visible.

Good luck and good sewing!
